U0074
Reserved by DocumentU0074 is a generic OBD-II network diagnostic trouble code: Reserved by Document. It is logged by the engine control unit when the network monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.
What U0074 means
DTC U0074 indicates that the primary ECM or another networked module has lost communication with a dedicated Emissions Control Module over the vehicle CAN bus. Some manufacturers use a separate emissions control module to manage specific aftertreatment functions such as SCR dosing, DPF regeneration monitoring, or EGR control, which then communicates its data to the main ECM via the network.
Causes are similar to other U00xx codes: a power or ground fault at the emissions module, a CAN bus wiring fault on the relevant segment, a failed or unresponsive emissions module, or bus contention from another module fault.
When communication with the emissions control module is lost, the ECM cannot receive critical aftertreatment data, which may force the aftertreatment system into a degraded or inhibited mode. This can lead to elevated emissions, SCR dosing inhibition, and potential compliance-related engine derates on affected platforms.
Common causes
Most-frequently reported root causes when U0074 is logged.
-
1
Power supply or ground fault at the dedicated emissions control module.
-
2
CAN bus wiring fault on the segment connecting the emissions module.
-
3
Failed emissions control module unable to communicate on the network.
-
4
Damaged or corroded harness connector at the emissions module.
-
5
CAN bus termination fault on the relevant network segment.
-
6
Another shorted module on the same bus pulling bus lines to an invalid level.
-
7
Software or programming fault in the emissions module causing it to drop off the network.

How to diagnose U0074
A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.
-
1
Scan all available modules for DTCs to identify all affected network nodes.
-
2
Check all fuses and power supplies for the emissions control module.
-
3
Inspect the emissions module harness connector for corrosion or pin damage.
-
4
Measure CAN bus voltage at the emissions module connector to check for bus activity.
-
5
Check CAN bus termination resistance on the relevant segment.
-
6
Attempt to communicate directly with the emissions module using a scan tool.
-
7
Replace or reprogram the emissions module only after confirming bus and power supply are intact.

Frequently asked questions
What is a dedicated emissions control module?
Some vehicles use a separate ECU to manage specific aftertreatment components such as the SCR dosing system, allowing the main ECM to focus on engine management.
Can U0074 appear alongside SCR or DEF codes?
Yes. If the emissions module controls SCR dosing and communication is lost, related SCR malfunction codes will often accompany U0074.
Is U0074 vehicle-specific?
The code is SAE-standardized, but which physical module it refers to varies by manufacturer and vehicle architecture.
Will U0074 always cause a derate?
Not on all vehicles, but on emissions-compliance platforms where the emissions module governs SCR operation, loss of communication may trigger a power derate after a defined period.
Disabling U0074 in software
RaceTune can permanently disable U0074 — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.
Software modifications affect emissions compliance and are not road-legal in many jurisdictions. RaceTune service files are intended for motorsport, off-road, and export use.
