DTC P2201 — NOx Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Bank 1 Sensor 1 — is set by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM/ECM) when the upstream NOx sensor signal on Bank 1 falls outside the expected voltage or response range during normal engine operation. The NOx sensor is a critical emissions component that measures nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust stream; its signal is used to regulate Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) dosing of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue) and, on some calibrations, to trim EGR rates. A range/performance fault means the sensor is electrically present but its output is implausible — too high, too low, frozen, or non-responsive to known exhaust conditions.

Because this sensor sits upstream of the SCR catalyst and directly governs AdBlue injection quantity, a faulty reading causes the ECM to lose closed-loop emission control. The SCR system may over- or under-dose DEF, degrading catalyst efficiency and potentially triggering secondary NOx downstream faults (P2202, P229E/F). On Euro 5/6 and equivalent diesel platforms the ECM typically illuminates the MIL immediately and may impose a torque-reduction limp mode after a set number of warm-up cycles with the fault active.
