P2200
Sensor Circuit Bank 1P2200 is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Sensor Circuit Bank 1. It is logged by the engine control unit when the scr/adblue monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.
What P2200 means
P2200 is an SAE generic powertrain code that indicates the ECM/PCM has detected an electrical malfunction in the NOx (nitrogen oxide) sensor circuit for Bank 1, Sensor 1. This is the upstream NOx sensor positioned before the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst in the exhaust stream. The sensor measures raw exhaust NOx concentration so the ECM can calculate the correct DEF/AdBlue dosing rate for the SCR system. A circuit malfunction means the ECM detected a wiring, connector, or sensor supply fault — typically an open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage.
When P2200 is stored, the ECM loses accurate NOx feedback and typically substitutes a fixed default dosing strategy or disables AdBlue injection entirely. This causes increased NOx tailpipe emissions. On Euro 5/6 and EPA Tier 4 vehicles, extended operation without a functioning upstream NOx sensor often leads to a progressive SCR system lockout with a de-rate warning.
P2200 is closely related to P2201 (range/performance), P2202 (circuit low), and P2203 (circuit high).
Common causes
Most-frequently reported root causes when P2200 is logged.
-
1
Open circuit in the NOx sensor signal, ground, or supply wiring harness
-
2
Corroded, spread, or water-damaged connector pins at the NOx sensor or ECM
-
3
Short to ground or short to battery voltage on the sensor signal wire
-
4
Failed NOx sensor (internal open or shorted element)
-
5
Faulty or missing sensor heater supply — sensor cannot reach operating temperature
-
6
Broken or loose sensor ground path causing floating reference voltage
-
7
ECM/PCM internal fault affecting the NOx sensor input circuit (rare)
-
8
Damaged wiring from heat soak near the exhaust or mechanical chafing

How to diagnose P2200
A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.
-
1
Retrieve all stored DTCs and freeze-frame data
-
2
Inspect the NOx sensor wiring harness and connector for corrosion, spread pins, chafing
-
3
Measure sensor supply voltage and ground at the connector with the ignition on
-
4
Perform a resistance/continuity check on each circuit wire from sensor connector back to ECM
-
5
If wiring and power supply are good, monitor live NOx sensor data with a scan tool through a cold start and warm-up cycle
-
6
Replace the NOx sensor if wiring is verified intact
-
7
After repair, clear DTCs, perform a drive cycle that exercises the SCR system

Frequently asked questions
Can I drive with P2200 stored?
Short-term driving to a workshop is generally safe, but extended operation is not advisable. On commercial vehicles or vehicles with strict emissions monitoring, the ECM may impose a torque de-rate.
Is the NOx sensor the same as the oxygen (lambda) sensor?
No. The NOx sensor measures nitrogen oxide concentration in the exhaust and is specific to SCR/AdBlue-equipped diesel engines.
Why does P2200 sometimes appear after an AdBlue refill or SCR service?
Reconnecting the NOx sensor connector or disturbing the wiring harness during a fluid top-up or DPF/SCR service can introduce intermittent contact faults.
Will clearing the code fix the problem?
Clearing the code without repairing the underlying fault will only cause the MIL to return once the ECM completes its NOx sensor monitor.
Disabling P2200 in software
RaceTune can permanently disable P2200 — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.
