What P204A means

DTC P204A is a SAE generic powertrain code defined as Reductant Pressure Sensor Circuit. It is set when the powertrain control module (PCM) or dedicated SCR control module detects an electrical fault — open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage — on the signal circuit of the reductant (Diesel Exhaust Fluid / DEF / AdBlue) pressure sensor. The code flags a general circuit-level problem; related codes P204B (range/performance), P204C (low input), and P204D (high input) narrow the fault further when signal voltage is present but out of range.

The reductant pressure sensor is located on the DEF dosing module or high-pressure supply line between the DEF pump and the dosing injector. It is typically a three-wire analogue sensor (5 V reference, signal, and ground). The PCM monitors the returned signal voltage continuously; a reading outside the circuit-rationality window (usually below ~0.1 V or above ~4.9 V on a 0–5 V sensor) triggers P204A. Because the SCR system cannot confirm safe dosing pressure, the module suspends DEF injection to protect the catalyst from over- or under-dosing.

P204A affects only diesel vehicles equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) — primarily Euro 5/6 and EPA Tier 2/Bin 5 or later light- and heavy-duty diesel engines. The MIL illuminates and, on many platforms, a reagent warning or a derate countdown timer is triggered. Ignoring the fault will eventually lead to a torque derate or speed limiter once the permitted SCR-fault drive cycle count is exceeded.

Will P204A put my diesel into limp mode immediately?

Not always on the first occurrence. Most Euro 6 and EPA-compliant platforms allow a limited number of drive cycles with the fault active before enforcing a torque or speed derate. However, the MIL will illuminate immediately, and if the fault persists across subsequent drive cycles the SCR derate countdown will begin — resulting in reduced power or a speed cap — so prompt diagnosis is important.

Is P204A the same as a low DEF level warning?

No. P204A is an electrical circuit fault on the pressure sensor, not a fluid-level issue. A low DEF level triggers a separate warning (typically a dedicated gauge or lamp) and its own DTC (e.g. P20B9). P204A means the module cannot read a valid pressure signal, regardless of how much DEF is in the tank.

Can I clear P204A and keep driving while I wait for parts?

Clearing the code stops the MIL temporarily, but if the root cause remains the code will return within one or two drive cycles. More importantly, with P204A active the SCR system is not dosing DEF, meaning NOx emissions will be out of compliance and the derate counter continues to count down. It is safe to drive short distances, but the fault should be repaired before the derate threshold is reached.

Does P204A affect petrol / gasoline vehicles?

No. The P204x family of codes is exclusive to vehicles fitted with a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, which uses a liquid reductant (DEF/AdBlue/urea solution) to reduce NOx in exhaust gas. SCR systems are fitted only to diesel engines meeting Euro 5/6 or EPA Tier 2 Bin 5 and later standards. Petrol vehicles do not use DEF and will never set this code.
