P0812

Reverse Input Circuit

P0812 is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Reverse Input Circuit. It is logged by the engine control unit when the powertrain monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.

What P0812 means

P0812 is a generic powertrain code covering the reverse input circuit. A reverse switch or reverse-range signal tells the control module that reverse gear has been selected. That same signal is normally used to power the reverse lamps and, depending on the vehicle, to enable the reversing camera and parking sensors, to inhibit certain functions, and to let the module cross-check the selected range against measured gear ratio and vehicle speed.

The module monitors the state of that input and stores P0812 when it sees something implausible: no reverse signal when reverse has clearly been engaged, a reverse signal present when the vehicle is moving forwards or another range is selected, or a voltage outside the expected range for an open or closed switch. Because the code is about the input signal rather than the gearset, the transmission itself is often mechanically fine.

The circuit involves the reverse switch on the gearbox or the range sensor in the shifter assembly, its wiring and connector, the relevant fuse, and the control module input. On manual gearboxes it is typically a simple switch screwed into the gearbox casing and exposed to road spray and heat, which is why corrosion and chafed wiring are such common causes. The most obvious real-world consequence is reverse lamps that do not light, or that stay on all the time, which is a safety concern.

Common causes

Most-frequently reported root causes when P0812 is logged.

  • 1
Failed reverse switch on the gearbox, worn or corroded internally so it no longer makes or breaks cleanly.
  • 2
Corroded, chafed or broken wiring in the reverse circuit, often where the harness runs near the gearbox or exhaust.
  • 3
Water ingress or corrosion in the reverse switch or range sensor connector.
  • 4
Blown fuse or an open feed supplying the reverse switch circuit.
  • 5
Transmission range sensor or shifter position sensor out of adjustment on vehicles where reverse is reported by a range sensor.
  • 6
Short to ground or to a voltage supply in the reverse signal wire, which can leave reverse lamps permanently lit.
  • 7
Poor control-module or lamp-circuit ground raising the measured voltage on the input.
  • 8
Faulty control module, which is rare and only to be considered once the switch, wiring and grounds test good.

Symptoms drivers notice

Check engine light on, usually with normal engine performance.
Reverse lamps do not come on when reverse is selected, or stay on all the time.
Reversing camera and rear parking sensors do not activate when reverse is engaged.
The gear or range display shows the wrong selection, or reverse is not indicated.
On some vehicles reverse is inhibited or engages roughly.
Automatic gearbox shift quality changes because the module distrusts the range information.

How to diagnose P0812

A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.

  1. 1
Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data, and note any accompanying range sensor, gear ratio or shift codes.
  2. 2
Watch the reverse switch or range input on live data while an assistant selects reverse and then other gears, and confirm the state changes as it should.
  3. 3
Check the reverse lamp fuse and bulbs, since a blown fuse or shorted bulb circuit can set the code and hide the real symptom.
  4. 4
Inspect the reverse switch on the gearbox and its connector for oil contamination, corrosion, damage and loose or pushed-out terminals.
  5. 5
Follow the harness from the switch towards the module and lamps, looking for chafing, heat damage and repairs, and flex it while watching live data to catch an intermittent open.
  6. 6
Measure the switch's open and closed states at the connector with the harness disconnected, and check the feed and ground at the switch against the wiring diagram.
  7. 7
If the switch and wiring are good, verify the range or shifter position sensor adjustment before considering the control module.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep driving with P0812?

The vehicle is normally driveable, but if the reverse lamps are not working other road users cannot see that you are backing up, and the reversing camera or parking sensors may be dead. That is a real safety issue and in many countries a non-working reverse lamp is also a defect, so get it fixed promptly.

Will P0812 fail an emissions test?

The fault has nothing to do with emissions, but a lit check engine light fails the visual check in most inspection regimes, and a non-functioning reverse lamp can fail a roadworthiness test separately.

Is P0812 expensive to fix?

Usually it is one of the cheaper codes. A reverse switch on a manual gearbox is an inexpensive part and often accessible, and wiring or fuse repairs cost little. It only becomes costly when the signal comes from a shifter range sensor that has to be replaced and calibrated.

Does P0812 mean my transmission is failing?

Not by itself. The code reports a problem with the electrical signal that says reverse is selected, not with the reverse gearset. If reverse also slips, whines or refuses to engage mechanically, that is a separate problem that needs its own diagnosis.

Disabling P0812 in software

RaceTune can permanently disable P0812 — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.

Permanent
The monitor is disabled in the ECU itself — not just cleared. It cannot return.
Tailored to your file
Each patch is matched to your specific software version — never a one-size-fits-all file.
Reversible
The original file is always preserved. Reflash the stock to return the ECU to factory state.
