P0794 is a generic automatic-transmission code set by the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) when the signal from intermediate shaft speed sensor "A" cuts out, glitches or jumps briefly and then returns to normal. The intermediate shaft runs between the input (turbine) shaft and the output shaft, and its speed sensor reads a toothed reluctor ring to tell the module how fast that part of the gear train is turning. The module uses that feedback to time clutch apply and release during every shift.

What makes P0794 distinct is the word intermittent. The module is not reporting a permanently dead circuit or a permanently wrong value; it is reporting momentary dropouts, spikes or signal breaks that come and go. Typically the fault is logged when the signal disappears or becomes erratic for a short window while the other speed sensors continue to report normally, or when consecutive readings change faster than the shaft could physically accelerate.

Intermittent faults of this kind are usually connection or mechanical-clearance problems rather than a component that has simply died. Loose terminals, chafed insulation that only shorts over a bump, a partly unseated sensor with a varying air gap, a chipped reluctor tooth, or debris on the sensor tip all fit the pattern.
