What P0792 means

P0792 is a generic automatic-transmission code stored when the transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM) receives a signal from intermediate shaft speed sensor "A" that is present but does not make sense. The intermediate shaft sits between the input (turbine) shaft and the output shaft. Its speed sensor is normally a magnetic or Hall-effect pickup reading the teeth of a reluctor ring, and it lets the module see what is happening in the middle of the gear train rather than only at each end.

The module knows the gear it has commanded, so it can calculate what the intermediate shaft speed should be from the input and output speed sensors. It continuously compares that calculation against the reported value. If the measured speed is implausible for the current gear, does not rise and fall smoothly with the other two sensors, sticks at a fixed value, or drifts outside the calibrated window, the range or performance test fails and P0792 is stored. Unlike a plain circuit-high or circuit-low code, this one means a signal exists but is wrong.

Because the module uses shaft speed feedback to time clutch apply and release, a wrong intermediate shaft reading directly degrades shift quality. Many vehicles respond by disabling adaptive learning or entering a failsafe gear.
