P0715

Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit Malfunction

P0715 is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A Circuit Malfunction. It is logged by the engine control unit when the trans monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.

What P0715 means

P0715 is set when the Transmission Control Module (TCM) or Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects an irregular, absent, or out-of-range signal from the Input/Turbine Speed Sensor A. This sensor monitors the rotational speed of the transmission's input shaft and turbine, providing critical data the TCM uses to calculate torque converter slip, command gear changes, and regulate line pressure.

The sensor generates either an AC voltage via a permanent magnet generator or a digital pulse via a Hall-Effect switch as a toothed reluctor ring rotates past it. When the TCM cannot reconcile this signal against vehicle speed and engine RPM, it logs P0715, illuminates the MIL, and typically commands a fail-safe or limp-home strategy.

Intermittent failures triggered by heat cycling are common, so thorough inspection of wiring and connectors under operating temperature is often necessary.

Common causes

Most-frequently reported root causes when P0715 is logged.

  • 1
Faulty or worn input/turbine speed sensor (A)
  • 2
Damaged, chafed, or broken sensor wiring harness
  • 3
Short-to-voltage or short-to-ground in the sensor circuit
  • 4
Poor, corroded, or loose electrical connector at the sensor or TCM
  • 5
Damaged or missing reluctor ring (toothed tone wheel) on the input shaft
  • 6
Failing torque converter causing abnormal turbine speed readings
  • 7
Internal transmission mechanical failure affecting input shaft rotation
  • 8
TCM fault (rare; rule out all circuit and sensor issues first)

Symptoms drivers notice

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL / Check Engine Light) illuminated
Transmission enters fail-safe / limp-home mode
Harsh, erratic, or delayed upshifts and downshifts
Torque converter clutch (TCC) does not engage or engages roughly
Noticeable decrease in fuel economy
Possible transmission overheating due to prolonged torque converter slip

How to diagnose P0715

A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.

  1. 1
Retrieve all stored and pending DTCs with a scan tool
  2. 2
Perform a visual inspection of the turbine speed sensor
  3. 3
Use a multimeter to check sensor resistance
  4. 4
Check for reference voltage and ground at the sensor connector
  5. 5
Use a scan tool live data screen to observe turbine speed sensor output while driving
  6. 6
Inspect the reluctor ring on the input shaft
  7. 7
If wiring, connector, and sensor test within spec and the code persists, perform TCM-specific pinpoint tests

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a P0715 code active?

Short-distance driving at reduced speed may be possible if the vehicle is in limp mode, but continued driving is not recommended.

Is P0715 always caused by a bad speed sensor?

Not always. While a failed input/turbine speed sensor is the most common cause, the same code can be triggered by damaged wiring or a broken reluctor ring.

How much does it cost to fix P0715?

Replacing the turbine speed sensor is typically a low-cost repair. If the wiring harness or transmission internals need repair, costs increase substantially.

Will P0715 clear itself after the problem is fixed?

The code will not clear on its own. Use a scan tool to erase the DTC and complete a drive cycle.

Disabling P0715 in software

RaceTune can permanently disable P0715 — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.

Permanent
The monitor is disabled in the ECU itself — not just cleared. It cannot return.
Tailored to your file
Each patch is matched to your specific software version — never a one-size-fits-all file.
Reversible
The original file is always preserved. Reflash the stock to return the ECU to factory state.

Software modifications affect emissions compliance and are not road-legal in many jurisdictions. RaceTune service files are intended for motorsport, off-road, and export use.
