What P06C9 means

P06C9 is a diesel-specific code stating that the glow plug for cylinder number 5 is behaving incorrectly from the control module's point of view. Glow plugs are heating elements fitted into each combustion chamber of a diesel engine. Since a diesel ignites fuel by compression heat alone, these elements are energised before and shortly after a cold start so that the charge reaches ignition temperature reliably and burns cleanly.

The glow plug control module monitors each plug circuit individually, measuring how much current the plug draws and inferring its resistance. Its calibration holds an expected window for a healthy plug. If the cylinder 5 circuit sits outside that window, the module classes it as "incorrect" rather than a plain open or short circuit. In practice that means a plug whose element has degraded with age, a plug of the wrong specification fitted at some earlier service, or additional resistance introduced by a corroded terminal or damaged harness lead. The module reports the condition to the ECU, which stores P06C9 and usually illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp.

Because the check normally runs at key-on or during the afterglow period, the code may only appear after the vehicle has sat and cooled. As only one cylinder of a five or six cylinder engine is affected, the engine will usually still start, but combustion in that cylinder is poor until it warms through, which is why the code often turns up beside rough-running or misfire complaints. P06C5 to P06CC are the equivalent codes for cylinders 1 through 8.

Usually yes for a short period. One weak glow plug mostly affects cold starting and the first minutes of running. In cold weather it can leave you unable to start, and repeated cold rough-running loads the diesel particulate filter with extra soot, so it should not be left indefinitely.

Will this fail an emissions test?

Yes in most regions, because the code turns the check engine light on. An OBD-based inspection fails a vehicle with a stored emissions-related code and an illuminated MIL, even if the tailpipe measurements themselves look acceptable.

Is this an expensive repair?
