What P06C8 means

P06C8 is a diesel-only fault code that reports a problem with the glow plug serving cylinder number 4. Glow plugs are electrically heated elements screwed into each cylinder of a diesel engine. Because a diesel has no spark plugs and relies purely on compression heat to ignite fuel, the glow plugs are energised before and shortly after a cold start to raise combustion-chamber temperature enough for reliable ignition and clean burning.

The glow plug control module (often called a GPCM, glow plug timer or glow plug relay module) does not just switch the plugs on and off. It monitors the electrical behaviour of each plug individually, measuring the current the plug draws and therefore its effective resistance. If the value measured on the cylinder 4 circuit falls outside the range the calibration expects, the module reports the plug as "incorrect" rather than simply open or shorted. That can mean a plug that has aged and drifted out of specification, a plug of the wrong part number or heating characteristic fitted during previous work, or added resistance somewhere in the harness. The module passes the fault to the ECU, which stores P06C8.
