What P06A5 means

Control modules generate their own regulated low-voltage reference supplies, typically five volts, and distribute each one on a shared bus to a group of sensors. The letters A, B, C and D identify which of those reference buses a code refers to. 'D' is the fourth bus, and on many vehicles it feeds transmission, transfer case or differential sensors rather than core engine sensors. The module monitors each reference bus continuously, because every sensor reading on that bus is only meaningful relative to a correct supply voltage.

P06A5 sets when the module measures the voltage on reference bus D above the regulated value by more than the allowed tolerance. The usual explanation is that the reference wire has come into contact with a higher-voltage circuit somewhere in the harness, so battery or switched-ignition voltage is being fed onto a five-volt line. A poor module ground can produce the same symptom by shifting the whole measurement upward, and an internal regulator failure can also over-supply the bus.

Every sensor on that bus is affected, so their signals read high or become nonsensical, and the module normally logs specific sensor codes alongside P06A5. It then falls back on substitute values, which typically shows up as limp mode, a transmission locked in a default gear, loss of driveline functions, or poor throttle response. Over-voltage on a reference line can also damage the sensors themselves, so the fault should not be left in place.

Can I keep driving with P06A5?

Only as far as necessary to get it diagnosed. Several sensors are reporting bad data, so the vehicle may drop into limp mode or shift unpredictably. Continued running with over-voltage on a five-volt line can also damage the sensors on that circuit.

Is this a sensor problem or a wiring problem?

Most often wiring. A five-volt reference cannot read high on its own unless something is feeding higher voltage onto it, so a short to power, a corroded connector or a bad module ground are the usual findings. A sensor with an internal short is possible but less common.

Why did several other codes appear at once?

All the sensors on that reference bus share the same supply. When the supply goes out of range they all report implausible values, so each one logs a code. Those codes are symptoms of the reference fault and normally clear once it is repaired.

Will it fail an emissions test?

Yes. A lit malfunction indicator lamp fails an OBD-II inspection outright, and readiness monitors are unlikely to have completed while the reference circuit is out of range.
