Sensor Reference Voltage 'D' Circuit/OpenP06A3 is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Sensor Reference Voltage 'D' Circuit/Open. It is logged by the engine control unit when the powertrain monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.
What P06A3 means
Control modules do not feed sensors directly from battery voltage. They generate one or more regulated low-voltage reference supplies internally, typically five volts, and distribute each one on a shared bus to a group of sensors. Throttle and pedal position sensors, pressure sensors, and transmission, transfer case and differential position and speed sensors are all commonly supplied this way. The letters A, B, C and D in the code identify which reference bus is affected; 'D' is the fourth such bus, and on many vehicles it serves driveline and transmission sensors rather than core engine sensors.
P06A3 sets when the module sees the reference voltage on bus D missing, or far below the regulated value, at a time when that bus should be alive. That points to an open in the reference feed, a short pulling the bus down, or an internal regulator that is no longer delivering. Because the reference is shared, every sensor on that bus loses its supply at once, so P06A3 almost always appears alongside a cluster of specific sensor circuit codes.
With no usable sensor inputs on that bus the module substitutes default values. Depending on which sensors are involved that can mean a limp-mode power restriction, a transmission locked in one gear, loss of four-wheel-drive functions, or in the worst case a crank-no-start. One water-filled or internally shorted sensor is enough to take the whole bus down, so the fault is not always where the shared code suggests.

Can I keep driving with P06A3?
Not advisable. A lost reference supply blinds several sensors at once, so the vehicle may drop into limp mode, refuse to shift, or stall unexpectedly. Drive it only as far as needed to get it looked at, and be prepared for it not to restart.
Do I need to replace the control module?
Usually not. Most cases are wiring or a single shorted sensor pulling the shared reference down. The module should only be suspected after you have proven the reference is missing right at its connector with all sensors on that bus unplugged.
Why are so many other codes stored at the same time?
The reference voltage is shared between several sensors. When it goes away, all of them report implausible signals at once, so the module logs a code for each. Those extra codes are useful evidence, not separate faults, and usually clear once the reference is restored.
Will it fail an emissions test?
Yes. The lamp being on is an automatic fail, and readiness monitors will not have completed while the reference circuit is faulty, which is a second reason for rejection.
