What P064D means

P064D is a generic powertrain code that reports an internal problem with the part of the engine control module that processes the oxygen sensor signals for bank 1. Modern modules do not read the lambda sensors with a simple voltage input; the signals pass through dedicated conditioning and processing circuitry, often a purpose-built chip, which converts the very small sensor currents and voltages into usable fuel-trim data. The module continuously self-tests that circuitry, and when its internal checks or plausibility comparisons fail it sets P064D rather than blaming the sensor itself.

The important distinction is that this is an internal control module performance code, in the P06xx range reserved for module and processor faults, not an oxygen sensor circuit code. It means the module has decided it can no longer trust its own oxygen sensor measurement path for bank 1. In practice, though, external problems can provoke it, because unstable supply voltage, a poor module ground, or a sensor circuit that is shorted to power or ground can push the internal processing outside its expected operating window and trip the self-test.

Can I keep driving with P064D?

Short trips are usually possible but it is not a code to ignore. Without trustworthy oxygen sensor data the engine runs on default fuelling, which wastes fuel and can send an over-rich mixture into the catalytic converter. Prolonged driving in that state risks damaging the catalyst, which is far more expensive than the original fault.

Does this mean my oxygen sensor is bad?

Not necessarily. P064D points at the module's internal processing of the bank 1 oxygen sensor signal, not at the sensor element. A shorted sensor or damaged wiring can provoke it, so the circuit must be tested, but simply fitting a new sensor without diagnosis frequently leaves the code in place.

Will it fail an emissions test?
