What P0633 means
P0633 is a generic OBD-II code meaning the engine or powertrain control module has not been given a valid immobilizer key identity. Every time the ignition is switched on, the immobilizer system reads the transponder in the key, and the immobilizer or body control module then exchanges a coded message with the ECM or PCM. Only if that exchange matches the key data stored in the engine module will the module allow fuel and spark. P0633 is set when the module finds that no valid key has been programmed into it, or that its stored key data does not match what the immobilizer is presenting.
The code sits in the P06xx control module group because it describes the state of the engine module's own stored security data, not a sensor fault. It appears most often after work has been done on the vehicle: a replacement or second-hand ECM or PCM fitted without the security relearn procedure, a new or cloned key that was never fully programmed, or an immobilizer module or key reader that has been swapped. It also follows events that corrupt the stored data, such as a deeply discharged battery, a voltage spike or an interrupted flash.
Because the immobilizer is a theft deterrent, a vehicle with P0633 will normally crank but not run, or start and immediately stall. The fix is almost always a security or key relearn performed with equipment authorised for that vehicle, so it usually needs a dealer or locksmith rather than a replacement part.

Can I still drive the vehicle with a P0633 code?
Usually not. The immobilizer is designed to prevent the engine running with an unrecognised key, so the vehicle will typically crank without starting or stall immediately. If it does happen to run, expect it to refuse to restart, so do not rely on it.
Can I fix P0633 myself?
Rarely. Some vehicles allow a key learn procedure using an existing working key, but most require a scan tool with security access and a manufacturer authorisation code. Without the right equipment the relearn simply cannot be completed, so a dealer or an automotive locksmith is normally needed.
Will this code fail an emissions test?
In practice a vehicle with P0633 usually cannot be tested at all, because it will not start or stay running. If it does run, the stored code and illuminated check engine light are an automatic failure on any OBD-II inspection.
Is P0633 expensive to fix?
