What P053A means

P053A is a generic powertrain code that reports an electrical fault, specifically an open circuit, in the control circuit for the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) heater. Many modern engines fit a small electric heating element into the PCV valve or the crankcase breather hose. Its job is to keep the ventilation path above freezing so that water vapour condensing out of blow-by gases cannot turn to ice and block the breather. A blocked breather lets crankcase pressure build, which pushes oil past seals and gaskets, so the ECU monitors the heater as an emissions-related device.

The engine control module drives the heater through a low-side or high-side output and watches that circuit electrically. During its self-test it looks for the expected current flow or feedback voltage when the heater is commanded on, usually in cold ambient conditions or shortly after a cold start. If the ECU sees no load at all, as happens with a broken heater element, a disconnected connector or a cut wire, it treats the circuit as open and stores P053A.
