The vent valve, also called the canister close valve or canister vent solenoid, sits on the fresh-air side of the charcoal canister. It normally stays open so the fuel tank can breathe, and the ECU energises it to seal the system when it wants to run a leak test. The ECU switches the valve through an internal output driver and monitors the circuit whenever the valve is commanded. If the measured voltage sits low when the strategy says it should be high, which typically means the control wire is shorted to ground, the solenoid winding has shorted internally, or the driver stage has failed, the ECU stores P0498 and generally suspends the EVAP leak monitor.
The practical consequences are a check engine light, an EVAP monitor that will never complete, and, if the fault leaves the valve closed, difficulty getting fuel into the tank because the tank cannot vent as it fills. The vent valve lives in a wet, salty environment near the rear of the vehicle, so its connector and harness are common failure points.
