What P0497 means

P0497 is a generic emissions code meaning the ECU commanded the evaporative emission (EVAP) purge valve to open but did not detect the flow it expected. The EVAP system captures fuel vapour from the tank in a charcoal canister and then draws it into the intake manifold to be burned with the normal fuel charge. That draw is the purge flow. When the ECU asks for purge and the system does not respond as calibrated, it records a low purge flow fault.

How the flow is measured varies between manufacturers. Many systems rely on the fuel tank pressure sensor: opening the purge valve should pull the tank and canister towards vacuum, so if the pressure barely moves the monitor fails. Other strategies infer flow from the change in manifold pressure, in short-term fuel trim, or in oxygen sensor response when purge is commanded. In every case the test only runs under a narrow set of conditions, such as a warmed-up engine, a stable cruise or idle, and a fuel level within limits, so the code often takes several drive cycles to set and can look intermittent.

Because the code describes missing flow rather than one broken component, anything in the vapour path can cause it: a purge valve that will not open properly, a blocked or fuel-saturated canister, a vent valve stuck closed so no replacement air can enter, collapsed vapour hoses, or a tank pressure sensor reporting incorrectly.

    Inspect every EVAP hose, the canister and the filler neck area for cracked, kinked, collapsed or disconnected lines, and for impact or rodent damage underneath the vehicle.

Can I keep driving with P0497?

Yes, in almost all cases it is safe to keep driving. The EVAP system manages fuel vapour and has no role in protecting the engine. It is still worth repairing reasonably soon, because a saturated canister or a leaking vapour line can get worse, the fuel smell is unpleasant, and the vehicle will not pass an emissions test while the light is on.

Will it fail an emissions test?

Yes. The check engine light is illuminated and the EVAP monitor has reported a failure, so the vehicle fails both the visual or OBD inspection and, in many cases, the monitor readiness check as well.

Is this expensive to fix?

Usually it is one of the cheaper emissions repairs. A purge valve, a vent valve or a length of vapour hose costs relatively little. The bill grows if the charcoal canister has to be replaced, particularly where it is mounted awkwardly under the vehicle or integrated into the tank assembly.

Could overfilling the fuel tank have caused this?

Yes, and it is a well-known cause. Continuing to add fuel after the pump nozzle clicks off can force liquid fuel into the charcoal canister, which is only designed to hold vapour. A soaked canister blocks purge flow and will set this code, so it is worth stopping at the first click from then on.
