What P0494 means

P0494 is a generic powertrain code meaning the engine control module has determined that the engine cooling fan is turning more slowly than the module commanded it to turn. It belongs to the engine cooling system rather than the emissions system, but because coolant temperature affects fuelling and monitor readiness, the ECU watches it and will light the check engine lamp when the fan cannot keep up.

On vehicles that set this code the fan is not a simple on/off unit. The ECU drives it through a pulse-width-modulated fan control module, a multi-speed relay arrangement or an electronically controlled viscous clutch, and it reads actual fan speed back either from a dedicated speed sensor on the fan hub or from feedback inside the fan control module. During normal running the ECU continuously compares commanded speed with measured speed. If measured speed stays meaningfully below the commanded value for longer than the calibrated time window, while coolant temperature or air-conditioning demand says the fan should be working harder, P0494 is stored.

Because the code is defined by a shortfall in fan output rather than by one failed part, the cause can be anywhere in that loop: resistance in the supply or ground path, a tired motor, a slipping clutch, something mechanically loading the fan, or a speed signal that under-reports. Left alone it risks overheating in slow traffic or when towing, so it should be investigated promptly.

Can I keep driving with P0494?

Short trips at road speed are usually tolerable because airflow through the radiator does most of the cooling, but the engine can overheat in stop-start traffic, when towing, or with the air conditioning running. Keep an eye on the temperature gauge and have it repaired soon, since overheating damage costs far more than a cooling fan repair.

Will it fail an emissions test?

Yes, in most regions. The check engine light is illuminated and the code is stored in the ECU, and an OBD or visual inspection fails on an active MIL regardless of what the underlying code is.

Is this expensive to fix?

It depends entirely on the cause. A corroded connector, a blown fuse or a failed relay is a cheap repair. A complete fan assembly with an integrated control module, or an electronically controlled viscous fan clutch, is one of the pricier cooling-system components.

Does P0494 always mean the fan motor has failed?

No. The code only states that measured fan speed was below commanded speed.
