The EGR system routes a measured amount of exhaust gas back into the intake so it passes through the engine a second time, which lowers peak combustion temperature and cuts oxides of nitrogen. Because recirculated gas is hot, many engines fit one or more temperature sensors in the EGR path, typically before or after the EGR cooler, so the ECU knows the temperature of the gas it is metering.
