What P0361 means
P0361 is a generic OBD-II fault code indicating a malfunction in the primary or secondary circuit of ignition coil "K". In coil-on-plug (COP) systems the PCM drives each coil independently; coil "K" is assigned to cylinder 11, making this code specific to V12 engines. The PCM supplies and interrupts the ground path to the coil primary winding on each firing event and monitors the resulting current waveform. When the module detects an open, a short to voltage, or a short to ground on the coil "K" driver line — or the expected inductive kick-back voltage is absent — it stores P0361 and illuminates the MIL. Cylinder 11 immediately stops firing, sending unburned fuel into the exhaust and raising the risk of catalytic converter damage. A companion misfire code P0311 (cylinder 11 misfire) is almost always stored at the same time. Because coil "K" sits deep in the engine valley of most V12 configurations, connector corrosion and heat-related insulation breakdown are common contributing factors alongside coil body failure.

P0361 is exclusive to 12-cylinder engines because coil "K" is the 11th coil in the alphabetical designator sequence (A = cyl 1 … K = cyl 11). Common applications include BMW N73 and N74 V12s, Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini V12 platforms, and other luxury or performance V12 configurations.
Is P0361 serious?
Yes. A dead cylinder on a V12 causes rough running and can overheat catalytic converters within minutes of sustained driving due to unburned fuel. Many modern PCMs enter a catalyst-protection mode that cuts fuel to the dead cylinder, causing a noticeable power drop. The fault should be diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible.
How do I know if it is the coil or the wiring?
The coil swap test is the most reliable quick check. Move coil "K" to a different cylinder and clear codes. If the circuit fault and misfire migrate to the new cylinder position, the coil is the cause. If the fault stays locked to cylinder 11 regardless of which coil is installed, the wiring or PCM driver is at fault.
Can P0361 set without an active misfire?
Yes. An intermittent open or short in the coil driver circuit can trigger P0361 as a pending or stored code even if the coil occasionally fires correctly. In such cases there may be no noticeable driveability complaint at the time of scan. Wiggling the harness near the coil connector while monitoring live misfire counters on a scan tool can expose the intermittent fault.
