What P0360 means

P0360 is a generic OBD-II fault code indicating a malfunction in the primary or secondary circuit of ignition coil "J". In a coil-on-plug (COP) ignition system, the PCM directly drives each coil via a dedicated control line, supplying and interrupting ground to trigger the high-voltage spark. Coil "J" corresponds to cylinder 10 and is therefore found exclusively on V10 and V12 engines. The primary circuit carries the low-voltage trigger signal from the PCM, while the secondary circuit is the high-voltage side that delivers spark to the plug. The PCM monitors the coil driver circuit continuously; if it detects an open, a short to voltage, or a short to ground on the coil "J" driver line — or if the expected current ramp-up profile is absent — it stores P0360 and illuminates the MIL. Because the affected cylinder stops firing, raw fuel enters the exhaust stream, posing a serious catalytic converter damage risk if the fault persists. Which vehicles set P0360?

P0360 is only possible on vehicles with at least 10 cylinders because coil designators A–J map to cylinders 1–10. In practice it appears on V10 engines (e.g., Dodge Viper, Audi R8 5.2, BMW M5/M6 S85) and V12 engines (e.g., BMW 7-Series N73, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce). It will not be set on 4-, 6-, or 8-cylinder engines.

Can I drive with P0360 active?

Short distances at reduced speed may be unavoidable, but driving with an active coil circuit fault risks permanent catalytic converter damage from unburned fuel passing through the exhaust. Some PCMs will cut fuel to the affected cylinder in catalyst-protection mode, causing a noticeable power reduction. The fault should be diagnosed and repaired promptly.

Will swapping coils confirm whether the coil itself is bad?

Yes — this is the fastest field test. Move the suspect coil "J" to a different cylinder and clear codes. If a new misfire code follows the coil to its new cylinder, the coil is faulty. If the misfire remains on cylinder 10 after the swap, the wiring, connector, or PCM driver circuit for that position is the root cause.

Could P0360 be caused by a bad spark plug rather than the coil?

A fouled or failed spark plug can overload the coil's secondary circuit and in some cases trigger a circuit fault code, but P0360 specifically flags the electrical driver circuit detected by the PCM. If swapping the coil does not move the fault, inspect the spark plug and check for carbon tracking inside the coil boot before condemning the wiring or PCM.
