What P02F5 means

P02F5 is a generic powertrain code indicating that the engine control module (ECM) has detected the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 8 performing outside the range the manufacturer specified. Because it names cylinder 8, it only occurs on engines with at least eight cylinders - typically V8, V10 and V12 petrol and diesel engines.

Each injector is driven by its own output stage inside the ECM, and the ECM watches that circuit as it energises the injector. The range and performance monitor is more sensitive than a simple open-or-short test: it examines how the current builds and collapses through the injector coil and compares that electrical signature with the calibrated expectation for a healthy injector at the commanded pulse. Drifted coil resistance, a high-resistance joint, a partially broken wire, or an injector that does not respond as commanded all push the measurement outside the acceptable window and store P02F5. On common-rail diesel engines the ECM may additionally judge the injector by the fuel delivery correction it has had to learn for that cylinder.

The result is that cylinder 8 receives the wrong quantity of fuel, or receives it at the wrong moment, so P02F5 is frequently stored alongside a cylinder 8 misfire code. Left unrepaired, unburnt fuel reaching the exhaust can overheat and damage the catalytic converter or diesel particulate filter, so the ECM will usually light the malfunction indicator lamp and may reduce engine power.

Can I keep driving with P02F5?

Best not to for long. Fuel that is not burned properly in cylinder 8 passes into the exhaust and can overheat the catalytic converter or particulate filter, turning a fuelling fault into a much larger bill. Driving it gently to a workshop is fine, but avoid towing, high loads and long trips.

Will this fail an emissions test?

Yes. The illuminated check engine light alone fails any test that reads the OBD system, and the uneven fuelling from one cylinder usually pushes measured tailpipe emissions out of specification as well.

Is this expensive to fix?

It depends on the cause. A corroded connector or a rubbed-through wire is a cheap fix. A replacement injector is moderate on a port-injected petrol engine, and significantly more on a direct-injection or common-rail diesel where access and labour add up. An internal ECM fault is the most costly outcome.

Why does the code point at a specific cylinder?

The ECM drives each injector on its own circuit and monitors each one separately, so it can tell you exactly which circuit misbehaved. That is helpful - it narrows the investigation to the wiring, connector, driver and injector for cylinder 8 rather than the whole fuel system.
