P02E4

Diesel Intake Air Flow Control Stuck Open

P02E4 is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Diesel Intake Air Flow Control Stuck Open. It is logged by the engine control unit when the air/maf monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.

What P02E4 means

P02E4 is stored when the PCM detects a lower-than-expected voltage on the cylinder 3 fuel injector driver circuit, indicating a short to ground somewhere in the circuit path. The PCM monitors the voltage state of the injector driver when it commands the circuit off; if voltage fails to rise to the expected level, the module recognises a grounding fault and logs this code.

A short to ground on cylinder 3 injector circuit may cause over-current conditions in the PCM driver channel, and on some calibrations the PCM will disable the affected driver to prevent damage. This results in no fuelling on cylinder 3, a complete misfire, and potentially rich exhaust from unburned fuel on that cylinder.

The diagnostic approach is the same as for other cylinder-specific low injector codes: isolate the harness, test continuity to ground with the injector unplugged, check solenoid insulation, and inspect the connector. Thermal imaging or wiggle tests can help locate intermittent faults that do not present under static conditions.

Common causes

Most-frequently reported root causes when P02E4 is logged.

  • 1
Short to ground in the cylinder 3 injector signal wire.
  • 2
Solenoid winding breakdown allowing current path to injector housing ground.
  • 3
Chafed harness contacting engine block near cylinder 3.
  • 4
Corrosion-induced pin bridge inside the cylinder 3 injector connector.
  • 5
Aftermarket wiring modification creating an unintended ground path.
  • 6
PCM injector driver internal failure causing low-side leakage current.

Symptoms drivers notice

MIL illuminated with possible cylinder 3 misfire code.
Rough idle and vibration characteristic of a dead or misfiring cylinder.
Fuel odour from enriched exhaust due to incomplete combustion.
Possible limp mode activation with reduced power.
Higher exhaust emissions from unburned hydrocarbons.

How to diagnose P02E4

A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.

  1. 1
Scan and record all active and pending codes and freeze frame data.
  2. 2
Disconnect the cylinder 3 injector and measure resistance from the signal wire to ground.
  3. 3
Locate any short to ground in the harness between the PCM and the injector connector.
  4. 4
Measure solenoid resistance at the injector pins and check solenoid continuity to the injector body.
  5. 5
Inspect the connector for moisture ingress or metallic contamination bridging pins.
  6. 6
Repair any harness short or replace the injector if internally shorted.
  7. 7
After repair, clear codes and perform a drive cycle to verify the fault does not return.

Frequently asked questions

Can engine oil contamination cause P02E4?

Oil entering the injector connector can lower insulation resistance and create a partial short to ground, potentially triggering this code.

Does P02E4 affect only cylinder 3?

Yes. The code is specific to the cylinder 3 driver circuit; other injector channels are independently monitored.

Can I use an injector cleaner to resolve P02E4?

No. P02E4 is an electrical circuit fault, not a deposit fouling issue. Injector cleaner will not resolve a short to ground.

How urgent is the repair for P02E4?

A short to ground should be addressed promptly to prevent PCM driver damage from sustained excess current.

Disabling P02E4 in software

RaceTune can permanently disable P02E4 — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.

Permanent
The monitor is disabled in the ECU itself — not just cleared. It cannot return.
Tailored to your file
Each patch is matched to your specific software version — never a one-size-fits-all file.
Reversible
The original file is always preserved. Reflash the stock to return the ECU to factory state.

Software modifications affect emissions compliance and are not road-legal in many jurisdictions. RaceTune service files are intended for motorsport, off-road, and export use.
