P02C9 is set when the PCM determines that the fuel injector for cylinder 12 is leaking — passing fuel into the cylinder when it should be closed. Modern PCMs monitor fuel rail pressure decay after engine shutdown or compare individual cylinder contribution during cut-fuel deceleration events; if the pressure on the rail drops faster than expected, or if cylinder 12 shows a disproportionately positive contribution during decel fuel cut, the code is stored and the MIL illuminates. A leaking injector creates a persistently rich condition in cylinder 12, wets the spark plug, washes the cylinder bore, and can introduce raw fuel into the intake during off events. Like all cylinder-12 codes, P02C9 only occurs on V12 and W12 engine configurations. Is P02C9 dangerous to drive with?

Driving with P02C9 is not immediately dangerous to the driver, but it can cause progressive mechanical damage: oil dilution from fuel wash-down reduces bearing lubrication, and catalytic converter overheating is a fire risk if fuel pooling is severe. It should be diagnosed promptly.

How do I confirm the injector is leaking rather than the O-ring?

Can this code appear on a petrol direct injection (GDI) V12?

Yes. GDI injectors spray directly into the combustion chamber at much higher pressures (150–350 bar) and are equally susceptible to needle seat wear. Diagnosis differs slightly — rail pressure is monitored by a high-pressure sensor — but the fundamental fault detection and symptoms are the same.
