P02C2
Cylinder 11 - Fuel Trim at Max LimitP02C2 is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Cylinder 11 - Fuel Trim at Max Limit. It is logged by the engine control unit when the powertrain monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.
What P02C2 means
P02C2 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code stored when the PCM detects that the individual cylinder fuel trim correction for cylinder 11 has reached its maximum positive adjustment limit — typically around +25% — due to a persistently lean air/fuel mixture in that combustion chamber. Under normal closed-loop operation, the PCM continuously adjusts injector pulse width using oxygen sensor feedback and crankshaft acceleration data to maintain stoichiometry on a per-cylinder basis. When cylinder 11 consistently demands maximum positive enrichment and the PCM can no longer compensate adequately, P02C2 is stored and the MIL is illuminated. This code is exclusively applicable to engines with eleven or more cylinders, which in practice means V12 configurations such as those found in BMW 7-series (N73/N74), Mercedes-Benz S600/SL65/AMG (M275/M276 biturbo), Rolls-Royce, Bentley W12, Lamborghini Aventador V12, Ferrari, and Aston Martin platforms. A sustained lean condition at maximum trim is mechanically significant: elevated combustion temperatures raise the risk of pre-detonation, accelerate valve seat wear, and can permanently damage piston crowns if the root cause is not addressed promptly.
Common causes
Most-frequently reported root causes when P02C2 is logged.
-
1
Clogged, restricted, or failing fuel injector on cylinder 11 delivering insufficient fuel volume
-
2
Low fuel pressure from a failing fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, or faulty pressure regulator starving cylinder 11
-
3
Vacuum leak at the intake manifold gasket, vacuum hose, or charge pipe near cylinder 11 admitting unmetered air
-
4
Faulty or contaminated upstream oxygen sensor on the cylinder 11 bank providing inaccurate lean feedback to the PCM
-
5
Defective mass air flow (MAF) or manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor causing the PCM to under-calculate the air charge
-
6
EGR valve stuck open introducing excess exhaust gas and diluting the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder 11 combustion event
-
7
Wiring fault or corroded connector at the cylinder 11 injector circuit reducing actual injector dwell time
-
8
PCM software fault or calibration error causing erroneous fuel trim limits or incorrect injector commands

How to diagnose P02C2
A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.
-
1
Connect a scan tool, retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data, and address any MAF, MAP, or oxygen sensor codes first as these can cause secondary single-cylinder trim faults
-
2
Inspect the intake manifold, vacuum lines, and charge pipes near cylinder 11 for cracks, loose connections, or collapsed hoses that could admit unmetered air
-
3
Test fuel pressure at idle and under load against manufacturer specifications to rule out pump or fuel pressure regulator failure before suspecting the injector
-
4
Use scan tool live data to observe short-term and long-term fuel trim on both banks and confirm the lean condition is isolated to cylinder 11 rather than a bank-wide issue
-
5
Perform an injector balance or cylinder contribution test to compare cylinder 11's fuel delivery against adjacent cylinders — a significantly lower contribution points to a restricted injector
-
6
Use a DVOM to verify proper voltage and ground pulse at the cylinder 11 injector connector, and measure injector coil resistance to detect open or shorted windings
-
7
If electrical circuits test good, remove and flow-test or ultrasonically clean the cylinder 11 injector, replacing it if flow rate deviates more than 5% from specification

Frequently asked questions
Which vehicles can trigger P02C2?
Cylinder 11 physically does not exist on engines with fewer than eleven cylinders. P02C2 is therefore limited to V12 platforms such as BMW 7-series (N73/N74 engines), Mercedes-Benz S600/SL65/AMG (M275 biturbo V12), Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and Phantom, Bentley Continental W12, Lamborghini Aventador, Ferrari 812 Superfast, and Aston Martin DB11. If P02C2 appears on a vehicle with a smaller engine, suspect a PCM error or incorrect scan tool database.
Is it safe to continue driving with P02C2 active?
Short distances at low load may be tolerable, but continued driving with cylinder 11 at maximum lean trim risks detonation (knock) under load, which can fracture piston ring lands or damage the cylinder head. Elevated combustion temperatures also accelerate exhaust valve wear. Prompt diagnosis is strongly advised to prevent escalation to engine damage.
Could a bad oxygen sensor alone trigger P02C2?
Yes. A lazy or contaminated upstream oxygen sensor reporting a falsely lean exhaust signal can cause the PCM to command increasing positive fuel trim until the maximum limit is reached. Always verify oxygen sensor response time and switching frequency before replacing the injector, as a sensor replacement is far less expensive than unnecessary injector replacement.
Will clearing P02C2 fix the problem?
No. Clearing the code without addressing the root cause will result in the code returning within one or two drive cycles once the PCM re-enters closed-loop operation and re-accumulates positive fuel trim to its limit. Fix the underlying fuel delivery or air metering fault first, then clear the code and perform a complete drive cycle to verify the repair.
Disabling P02C2 in software
RaceTune can permanently disable P02C2 — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.
Software modifications affect emissions compliance and are not road-legal in many jurisdictions. RaceTune service files are intended for motorsport, off-road, and export use.
