P0243

Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction

P0243 is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Turbocharger Wastegate Solenoid A Malfunction. It is logged by the engine control unit when the turbo/boost monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.

What P0243 means

P0243 is set when the ECU detects a malfunction in the control circuit for wastegate solenoid 'A' — the boost control solenoid that meters pneumatic pressure to open or close the turbocharger's wastegate actuator. By pulsing this solenoid at a variable duty cycle, the ECU regulates how much exhaust gas is bypassed around the turbine wheel, directly controlling peak boost pressure. A circuit fault here prevents the ECU from commanding the wastegate and therefore from safely limiting boost.

The fault is typically electrical: an open or short in the solenoid winding, a broken wire between the ECU and solenoid, or corrosion at the solenoid connector. A mechanically seized solenoid valve — one that does not move despite correct electrical drive — may also trigger the code when the ECU's back-EMF or current monitoring detects abnormal winding behaviour. Because the wastegate defaults to a partially open position when uncontrolled, the most common result is underboosting and reduced power, though a stuck-closed solenoid can allow overboost.

This code should be treated with urgency. Without reliable wastegate control the turbocharger cannot be protected from overboost, which risks boost-related engine damage on petrol engines and loss of EGR/VNT interaction on diesel platforms. Most ECUs will enter reduced-power (limp) mode once P0243 is stored.

Common causes

Most-frequently reported root causes when P0243 is logged.

  • 1
Open circuit in the solenoid winding — internal wire break causing infinite resistance across the coil.
  • 2
Short circuit in the solenoid winding or solenoid supply wire to ground or to battery positive.
  • 3
Corroded or damaged solenoid connector preventing current flow to the coil.
  • 4
Broken, chafed, or heat-damaged wiring between the ECU output driver and the solenoid.
  • 5
Failed ECU output driver transistor that cannot sink current through the solenoid coil.
  • 6
Mechanically seized solenoid valve that does not respond to electrical actuation.
  • 7
Cracked or disconnected vacuum/boost hose between the solenoid and the wastegate actuator diaphragm.

Symptoms drivers notice

Check Engine Light illuminated, often accompanied by reduced-power or limp mode activation.
Loss of boost pressure and sluggish acceleration as the wastegate defaults to a less controlled position.
Inconsistent or erratic boost levels — boost may build then suddenly drop under load.
Unusual hissing or rattling from the turbocharger area if the wastegate actuator flutters uncontrolled.
Possible overboost on some configurations if the solenoid failure allows the wastegate to close fully.

How to diagnose P0243

A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.

  1. 1
Scan for all DTCs; note whether companion boost codes (P0234 overboost, P0299 underboost) are also present — they help identify whether the wastegate is stuck open or closed.
  2. 2
Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring harness for corrosion, heat damage, or backed-out pins.
  3. 3
Disconnect the solenoid and measure resistance across its terminals with a multimeter; compare to the manufacturer specification (typically 10–30 Ω). Infinite resistance = open coil; near-zero = short.
  4. 4
With the connector disconnected, check for battery voltage and a good control ground at the harness side when the ECU commands the solenoid on.
  5. 5
If wiring and solenoid winding are good, check the vacuum/boost hose to the wastegate actuator for cracks or blockage.
  6. 6
Inspect the wastegate actuator rod for free movement — a seized rod prevents response even with a healthy solenoid.
  7. 7
Replace the solenoid if the coil is out of specification; repair any wiring faults before substituting parts.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to drive with P0243?

Briefly and cautiously, but not for an extended period. Without wastegate control the turbo can overbost on some engines, risking piston or head damage. Most ECUs protect the engine by entering limp mode, but the underlying fault should be repaired promptly.

What is the wastegate solenoid's job?

It is a small electrically controlled valve that regulates the air or exhaust pressure acting on the wastegate actuator diaphragm. The ECU pulses it rapidly (PWM) to precisely vary boost pressure; without it the wastegate position is uncontrolled.

Could a bad vacuum hose cause P0243?

A cracked hose alone typically does not set P0243 because this is an electrical circuit fault. However, a hose failure will cause boost control problems that may appear alongside P0243 if the solenoid is also faulty, or produce boost-level codes (P0234/P0299) when the solenoid circuit is healthy.

My solenoid tests fine electrically — could it still be faulty?

Yes. A solenoid can have correct coil resistance but a sticking or seized internal valve that does not open and close mechanically. Apply 12 V directly to the solenoid and listen or feel for a distinct click; no click with correct resistance indicates a seized valve.

Disabling P0243 in software

RaceTune can permanently disable P0243 — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.

Permanent
The monitor is disabled in the ECU itself — not just cleared. It cannot return.
Tailored to your file
Each patch is matched to your specific software version — never a one-size-fits-all file.
Reversible
The original file is always preserved. Reflash the stock to return the ECU to factory state.

Software modifications affect emissions compliance and are not road-legal in many jurisdictions. RaceTune service files are intended for motorsport, off-road, and export use.
