Diagnostic trouble code P021C is stored when the powertrain control module (PCM) detects a discrepancy in the fuel injection timing of cylinder 9 that falls outside the manufacturer-specified tolerance window. The PCM continuously monitors crankshaft and camshaft position sensor signals to calculate precise injection events for each cylinder; when the actual timing of cylinder 9 deviates from the commanded value, P021C is logged and the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is illuminated. Because cylinders 9 through 12 only exist in V10 or V12 configurations, this code is confined to large-displacement diesel engines found in heavy-duty trucks, performance SUVs, and specialist vehicles. No. Cylinder-specific injection timing codes in the P020A–P021F range are defined for diesel direct-injection systems. Cylinders 9–12 additionally require a V10 or V12 layout.

Why does P021C sometimes appear together with crankshaft or camshaft sensor codes?
