P008A

Low Pressure Fuel System Pressure - Too Low

P008A is a generic OBD-II powertrain diagnostic trouble code: Low Pressure Fuel System Pressure - Too Low. It is logged by the engine control unit when the powertrain monitor detects that a specific fault threshold has been exceeded — typically resulting in the malfunction-indicator lamp (MIL / check-engine light) being illuminated.

What P008A means

P008A is an SAE generic powertrain code set when the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) detects that pressure in the low-pressure (lift/feed) fuel circuit has fallen below the manufacturer-specified threshold. On direct-injection and common-rail diesel engines the fuel system operates in two stages: a low-pressure pump feeds fuel from the tank to a high-pressure pump; P008A specifically targets that upstream, low-pressure stage.

Insufficient low-side pressure starves the high-pressure pump of fuel volume, which in turn prevents the rail from reaching operating pressure. This can produce hard starting, rough idle, hesitation under load, and in severe cases the engine will enter limp mode.

Because the low-pressure circuit feeds the entire injection system, sustained low pressure can cause premature wear of the high-pressure pump and injectors.

Common causes

Most-frequently reported root causes when P008A is logged.

  • 1
Weak or failing low-pressure (lift/feed) fuel pump
  • 2
Clogged or restricted fuel filter / pre-filter strainer
  • 3
Faulty fuel pressure regulator or volume control valve
  • 4
Restricted or kinked fuel supply line
  • 5
Low fuel level or aerated/contaminated fuel
  • 6
Defective fuel pressure sensor (low-pressure side) or wiring fault
  • 7
Leaking fuel pressure relief valve allowing pressure bleed-off
  • 8
PCM/FPCM software fault or failure (rare)

Symptoms drivers notice

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL / Check Engine Light) illuminated
Hard starting or extended crank time, especially when cold
Engine hesitation, stumble, or surge under acceleration
Rough or unstable idle
Reduced engine power or limp-mode engagement
Increased fuel consumption and elevated exhaust emissions

How to diagnose P008A

A typical diagnostic flow when this code is present.

  1. 1
Verify fuel level and inspect fuel quality
  2. 2
Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data
  3. 3
Connect a fuel pressure gauge (or use live scan data) to measure low-side fuel pressure at idle and under load
  4. 4
Inspect the low-pressure fuel lines and fittings for kinks, cracks, or restrictions
  5. 5
Test the low-pressure fuel pump: measure voltage, ground, and current draw
  6. 6
Inspect the fuel pressure sensor circuit for damaged wiring, corrosion, or poor connector contact
  7. 7
If pump output and sensor circuits are within spec, test the fuel pressure regulator/volume control valve

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a P008A code active?

Short distances at low load may be possible if the engine runs, but continued driving risks damage to the high-pressure fuel pump.

Does P008A always mean the fuel pump needs replacing?

Not necessarily. A clogged fuel filter or pre-filter strainer is often the root cause and is a cheaper fix.

Is P008A the same as P008B or P0087?

No. P0087 covers overall fuel rail pressure too low. P008A specifically targets the low-pressure supply circuit. P008B is the companion code for low-pressure fuel pressure too high.

Which vehicles most commonly set P008A?

P008A is most frequently seen on direct-injection petrol engines (GDI/TGDI) and common-rail diesel engines that use a two-stage fuel delivery system.

Disabling P008A in software

RaceTune can permanently disable P008A — and any other OBD-II diagnostic trouble code — on every ECU family we support. The monitor is disabled inside the ECU itself, so the fault stops being logged: the warning light stays off and the engine never enters limp mode for this code. The change is tied to your exact software version.

Permanent
The monitor is disabled in the ECU itself — not just cleared. It cannot return.
Tailored to your file
Each patch is matched to your specific software version — never a one-size-fits-all file.
Reversible
The original file is always preserved. Reflash the stock to return the ECU to factory state.

Software modifications affect emissions compliance and are not road-legal in many jurisdictions. RaceTune service files are intended for motorsport, off-road, and export use.
