What P0043 means
P0043 indicates that the PCM has detected an abnormally low voltage or excessive current in the heater control circuit of the Bank 1 Sensor 3 heated oxygen sensor. The PCM monitors the heater control line to verify that current draw is within the expected range for a functioning heater element; a low-voltage reading on the control wire typically points to a short to ground somewhere in the circuit. This may be within the sensor's internal heater element itself (a shorted winding drawing too much current), in the external wiring harness — especially at points where the harness runs close to hot exhaust pipes — or less commonly within the PCM's internal driver circuit. Because the heater circuit is separate from the sensor's oxygen-measuring circuit, the lambda measurement output may still function intermittently when the engine is fully warm, but cold-start fuel control and post-catalyst monitoring will be degraded. The MIL is activated and a freeze-frame snapshot is stored to assist diagnosis.
