P0039 is a generic OBD-II powertrain code that indicates the Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a range or performance problem in the turbocharger or supercharger bypass valve 'A' control circuit. This differs from the P0033/P0036 open/low/high circuit family — P0039 means the circuit is electrically functional but the valve's actual behaviour does not match what the ECM commanded, pointing to a mechanical or actuator fault rather than a simple wire break.

The bypass valve (sometimes called the diverter valve or blow-off valve solenoid) is an electronically controlled device that relieves excess boost pressure during throttle lift-off and regulates maximum boost to protect the engine and turbocharger. The ECM commands the valve via a pulse-width-modulated solenoid and cross-checks the result against the boost pressure sensor reading. When the actual boost deviates from the expected response — for example the valve sticks open causing boost lag, or sticks closed causing overboost — the ECM logs P0039. This code requires prompt attention because an uncontrolled bypass valve can allow dangerous overboosting that may damage the turbocharger, intercooler hoses, or engine internals.

Will P0039 put my car in limp mode?

It depends on the vehicle manufacturer's calibration. Many turbocharged petrol and diesel engines do enter a reduced-boost limp mode when P0039 is active to protect the turbocharger and engine from uncontrolled boost. If you notice a significant power reduction alongside the MIL, assume limp mode and have the vehicle diagnosed promptly.

Can a boost leak trigger P0039?

Yes. A boost leak downstream of the compressor outlet will cause actual boost to fall below what the ECM commanded, and the ECM interprets the mismatch as a bypass valve performance fault. A pressurised intake leak test should always be part of P0039 diagnosis.

Is it safe to clear P0039 and keep driving?

Clearing the code without fixing the root cause is not recommended. If the bypass valve is stuck closed, driving under full boost risks overboost damage to the turbo and intercooler hoses. If it is stuck open, you lose boost and performance. Either way, the fault should be diagnosed and repaired rather than simply cleared.
